THE SUTER'S FUTURE
A project to redevelop The Suter is underway, with the aim of expanding the exhibition galleries, providing better display and collection care conditions, adding a dedicated educational space and revealing more of the original building’s heritage features. Popular features such as The Suter Theatre and Suter Café will be retained. The building will be seismically strengthened and its relationship to the neighbouring Queen’s Gardens and Albion Square improved.
Architects Mark Barron of Nelson firm Jerram Tocker + Barron in association with Ralph Roberts of Warren and Mahoney have been appointed by the Nelson City Council to develop plans for the redevelopment of The Suter.
The increase in the size, number and quality of the exhibition spaces, with temperature, humidity and lighting controls will mean that The Suter will be able to show more of its own collection, borrow in significant art works and obtain major touring exhibitions. It is envisaged that the education area would be used by school children, after school art programmes and for adult learning and art making activity.
Fundraising for this project is ongoing and The Bishop Suter Trust welcomes enquiries from potential benefactors. The Bishop Suter Trust is a registered charity and donations to it are tax deductable. The Trust governs The Suter on behalf of the Nelson City Council.
